“I’m not a professional writer. I’m a Hotel Manager but what I have to say is so important that I decided to sit down to write you this message in the best way I know. Lately I’ve had a lot of people asking me how did I manage to learn to speak Spanish in just a matter of a few months?. Even though I tried and tried to write a good story telling people all about how to learn to speak Spanish fast and efficiently, I just can’t do it. So I finally figured, why not just tell you exactly what I would tell you if we sat down for a cup of coffee…I will reveal the truth about how I learned to speak Spanish in just a few months...!![]()
Me, Jonathan Ovies, in January 2009
Hello,
My name is Jonathan Ovies. I've worked in the Hotel industry since 1995 as a General Manager and Director of Operations for some of the largest hotels in Western Canada. It's a career I've always found fascinating and challenging, until January of 2009 when I got called into the Chairman of the Board`s office to hand me an offer I could not refuse.
But there was a catch which had me facing a BIG PROBLEM.
The Company I`ve worked with for 15 years had just purchased the exclusive rights to operate one of the biggest Resorts in no other than the beautiful Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico's West Coast. A place where I've been many times and where I had spent wonderful holidays.
Last time I was there (Dec. '08) I even started contemplating the idea of purchasing real estate and eventually retire there. All of my friends and coworkers know me as one of the most enthusiastic supporters of Puerto Vallarta. However, despite my many visits and many friends now, my Spanish skills had always been far from something I could feel proud of.
And THAT was exactly the catch and problem I had to face in January '09 when I was offered the position of General Manager for the Resort my company recently purchased in Puerto Vallarta. BUT, I had to speak Spanish FLUENTLY.
I almost fainted when I heard that. My favourite ever destination, I could not believe it. BUT sadly enough and after all this years of unsuccessful attempts to learn Spanish, I was still FAR AWAY from speaking fluently. So, I was given 6 months to tackle the challenge.
Now, you may know that Puerto Vallarta is indeed a famous beach destination where close to 90% of the economy revolves around international tourism and English is spoken pretty much everywhere. You don't really need to speak Spanish to go on holidays, but to move there permanently as the General Manager of one of the largest resorts on charge of close to 950 employees is a different story altogether.
What to do?. I wanted the job and I wanted it badly.
So, I tackled the challenge promising myself that I would be speaking Spanish within a 6 months period. It was like a "do or die trying" kinda situation.
What did I do?. Don`t worry I won`t be selling you anything.
However I will try my best to explain the approach I took to succeed. I did indeed faced trials and tribulations since it was my very first attempt to really achieve my goal of speaking Spanish. Up until then my technique, so to speak, was to face the challenge as "I'll try to learn, so what I got were limited results".
Firstly I unpacked all the "Learn Spanish" books, tapes and cd's I had collected over the years. Unfortunately some of them were outdated but I didn't let that take me away from my goal. After the first week or two, I finally got what was the matter of the problem: lack of a system and consistency.
Funny, although I have always been a goal oriented and high performance hotel executive, somehow my approach to learning Spanish lacked those very qualities. Why, I guess I always associated the Spanish language with my ultimate goal of a retired person living in a wonderful spot in Western Mexico not to concerned of my language abilities and more on the "Margaritas" I would be enjoying on the beach
But now, I was facing a total different scenario. My speaking abilities were directly linked to my professional reputation.
Now the approach was different, it had to be that way. So, I set my mind to it. I started picturing myself speaking Spanish. I had sticky notes all over my house with words in Spanish and little reminders of my ultimate goal.
After my mind was set, I had to find the best performance learning technique that would work for me.
You know, like anything in life one must do what feels right and works. I took some wrong roads (buying the not so good Spanish courses), until I found the "holy grail". Well maybe not that much, but I finally found the system that worked for me, and boy it did, gotta tell ya...!
And Voila, 6 months later I am speaking Spanish fluently and with tons of confidence.
I won't insult your intelligence by saying that I am speaking a 100% perfect Spanish, but I am quite proud of myself and my friends in Mexico are very, very impressed. They now called me the "Mexican-Canadian" which is a huge compliment to me.
Long story short, I got the job and I am actually writing this from my office in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. How you like the view...?

Life is good, the job is great and my Spanish is close to "perfecto"
Yours truly,
Jonathan Ovies
